Rublev Oil Paint Medium Wilson’s Medium - 8 fl oz is a clear, gel-like oil painting medium inspired by an 18th century formula associated with British landscape painting. Traditionally made from thickened linseed oil, turpentine, and beeswax, this updated version is refined for modern studio use using pale bodied linseed oil, pure distilled gum spirits of turpentine, and rheological castor wax instead of beeswax.

Castor wax (from hydrogenated castor oil) is clear and largely colourless when molten, practically odourless, and much harder than most waxes. Because it is so efficient, it can be used in smaller amounts to give the medium its key working qualities: a buttery feel, improved body, and better stroke retention without heavy waxiness.

Wilson’s Medium contains no driers or resins, so it can be mixed directly into oil colours to adjust handling while maintaining a traditional oil paint film. It is especially useful if you want paint to hold brushstrokes, level smoothly, and dry to a subtle satin finish rather than a high gloss.

How to use Wilson’s Medium

  • Mix directly with oil paint: Add a small amount to increase body and improve brushstroke retention with a satin finish.

  • Use for paint making: Add to pigment and oil when making your own paint to help prevent pigment settling and improve thixotropy (shear-thinning), reducing slumping in storage.

  • Oil out / painting couch: Wipe a very thin coat over a dry, matte area before continuing to paint to restore a fresh look without making the surface overly glossy.
