Rublev Oil Medium Dammar (500g) is a natural tree resin traditionally used in oil painting, varnish making, and encaustic techniques. Harvested from Dipterocarpaceae family trees in Indonesia, this ABC grade dammar gum is one of the most popular resins for preparing spirit varnish and oil painting mediums.

Dammar can be dissolved in pure gum turpentine to make a concentrated varnish, which can then be diluted to create either a final picture varnish or a retouch varnish. It is valued for its ability to give oil paints a glossy, enamel-like surface, increase color saturation, and unify matte or uneven passages.

Common uses for dammar include:

  • Final picture varnish – for oil and tempera paintings.

  • Glazing medium – add to oil paints for transparent, glossy glazes.

  • Encaustic painting – an ingredient in wax-based mediums.

  • Batik – mixed with paraffin wax to prevent cracking in textile design.

  • Egg tempera – as part of an emulsion binder.

With a melting point of approx. 120 °C and a refractive index of 1.5, dammar provides clarity and brilliance. When properly prepared, it forms a golden clear varnish that enhances both color and depth.

Supplied in a 500g bag, Rublev Dammar Gum is part of the Rublev Natural Pigments range—trusted worldwide by artists seeking traditional, archival materials. Now available in Australia.
