Rublev Colours Dry Pigment – Cadmium Red Medium (PR108) 100g is a professional-grade synthetic inorganic cadmium red made from cadmium sulfoselenide (CdS/CdSe). Developed for artists and colour-makers who need maximum permanence, this pigment delivers the classic cadmium strengths: high opacity, powerful tinting, and exceptional durability in demanding conditions.

Cadmium sulfoselenide pigments are produced by co-precipitating cadmium and selenium salts, then calcining at high temperature to form a stable, partially crystalline structure. The result is a rich, saturated medium red with outstanding performance across multiple binder systems. With ASTM Lightfastness I in acrylic, oil, and watercolour, Cadmium Red Medium is a reliable choice for artworks and colour applications where fading is not an option.

This pigment also offers excellent chemical resistance and high heat stability (up to 400°C), which is why cadmium reds have long been used in high-performance coatings and durable colour applications as well as traditional paint-making.

Key pigment details

  • Colour Index: Pigment Red 108 (PR108)

  • Pigment type: Synthetic inorganic

  • Chemical name: Cadmium sulfoselenide

  • Mean particle size: 0.9 microns

  • Oil absorption: ~20 g oil / 100 g pigment (useful for grinding into oil paint)

  • Specific gravity: 5.12 | Refractive index: 2.384

  • Heat stability: 400°C

Best uses

  • Grinding into oil paint, dispersing into acrylic systems, and formulating watercolour/gouache, tempera, and other artist binder systems where opacity + permanence are essential.

Health & safety (important): Contains a cadmium compound and is classified by International Agency for Research on Cancer as probably carcinogenic to humans by inhalation. Avoid breathing dust, mists, or spray; do not sand; keep out of reach of children. Use appropriate PPE and good ventilation when handling dry pigment. Conforms to ASTM D-4236.
