Rublev Colours Red Sartorius Earth is a premium Italian red earth pigment sourced from mineral deposits in the Tuscany region. This natural mineral earth contains clay tinted by iron oxide, producing an exceptionally warm orange-red hue with the depth and subtle variation that only genuine earth pigments provide.

Based on iron oxide minerals associated with hematite, Red Sartorius Earth is highly valued for underpainting, warm shadows, terracotta and brick tones, and classic earth palette mixing. It disperses well in water based systems and grinds smoothly into oil paint, making it a versatile choice for traditional techniques including watercolour, egg tempera, casein tempera, fresco, and gesso toned grounds. Like other red ochres, it is known for excellent permanence, broad pigment compatibility, and strong lightfastness.

Key features

  • Natural Italian red earth pigment from Tuscany

  • Colour Index PR101 iron oxide earth with warm orange-red character

  • Permanent, lightfast and stable for traditional painting techniques

  • Suitable for oil paint making, watercolour, tempera, fresco and gesso grounds

  • Excellent for underpainting, portrait work, landscapes and architectural colour

Safety note: Considered non-toxic, but avoid inhaling dry pigment dust. Use a mask and good ventilation when handling powder.
