Rublev Colours Luberon Burnt Umber is a premium calcined earth pigment sourced from the historic ochre deposits of Gargas and Rustrel in the Luberon Massif of Provence, southern France. Produced by the last remaining European company still operating these famous quarries, this roasted umber delivers a deep reddish-brown masstone with a distinctive yellowish to greenish undertone, making it ideal for shadow work, natural neutrals, and classic earth palette mixing.
As a true umber earth coloured by iron and manganese oxides, Luberon Burnt Umber offers excellent tinting strength, good covering power, and dependable permanence across all major painting mediums. Use it to create warm shadow structures, rich underpainting, chocolate browns, and muted greys when mixed with blues or black. It disperses well for tempera and watercolour, grinds smoothly into oil paint, and is also suitable for fresco and acrylic systems where a stable earth brown is needed.
