Rublev Colours Italian Brown Ochre is a classic natural earth pigment sourced from Northern Italy (Verona region), where hydrated iron oxide minerals, primarily goethite, create a warm brown to reddish-brown colour with a restrained, earthy chroma. In paint, it produces a dependable masstone with moderate opacity and excellent mixing behaviour, making it a go to pigment for traditional palettes, underpainting, and natural colour harmonies.

As with other high quality ochres, Italian Brown Ochre is valued for its stability and compatibility across most binders and techniques. It performs reliably in oil, egg tempera, acrylic, watercolour, and fresco, and remains lightfast and chemically stable in normal studio use. This pigment grinds readily to a smooth paste, with moderate oil absorption, and can be extended or layered without losing its natural earth character.

Ideal for:

  • Landscape and portrait painting, underpainting, and tonal studies

  • Mixing warm neutrals, soil and stone tones, and muted reds

  • Making your own oil paint, watercolour, tempera, acrylic dispersions, and grounds

  • Artists who want a natural earth pigment with strong historical continuity

Safety note: While natural iron oxide earth pigments are generally low hazard, avoid inhaling airborne dust and use standard studio hygiene when handling dry pigments.
