Rublev Lead White #1 (also known as Flake White or Cremnitz White) is a classic opaque white prized for its smooth, “long” handling and sculptural body. Straight from the tube it feels creamy and slightly ropey, holding its shape as you work, which makes it ideal for confident brushwork, raised highlights, and textured passages.

This lead white is made with pale linseed oil and basic lead carbonate produced by modern processes, with no stabilisers (no stearates, no waxes) and no fillers to dilute or alter the pigment. The result is an exceptionally high pigment load and high pigment volume concentration (PVC) - up to 50% - which is why the Rublev 50ml tube typically feels noticeably heavier than many other flake whites. Despite the high pigment content, it remains workable and mixes cleanly with other oil colours.

Lead white was the most common white on the Old Masters’ palette because it offers a unique combination of opacity, handling, and traditional surface character. Many painters still choose it for its ability to produce strong, durable-looking highlights and natural mixtures, especially in portraits and classical painting methods.

Important safety note: This paint contains lead. Avoid ingestion and skin contact, do not sand dried paint, and keep away from children and pets. Use good studio hygiene and wash hands after use.

Note: Because Rublev Artist Oils contain no waxes or stabilisers, slight natural separation of pigment and oil may occur. Knead the tube to remix before painting.
