Rublev Natural Black Oxide is a dense, opaque mineral black made from natural black iron oxide (magnetite, Fe3O4) sourced from the last remaining European ochre producers in the French Luberon Massif. It is a deep black with high tinting strength that brushes long, giving controlled, slightly elastic strokes that suit both direct painting and structured underpainting.
Compared to many carbon blacks, this black oxide is comparatively neutral in undertone and non-greasy, making it especially useful when you want a clean, stable black that mixes predictably. It is excellent for neutralising colour without a sooty cast, creating strong value structure, mixing greys, and strengthening earth palettes. With titanium white it produces balanced, natural greys that stay calm and matte rather than slick.
