Rublev Italian Dark Ochre is a classic natural yellow earth made from hydrated iron oxide, the principal colouring agent in traditional ochres. The pigment is goethite (α-FeOOH) with naturally occurring mineral companions such as clay, chalk, and silica, which give this colour its grounded warmth and timeless ochre character. Unlike red ochres (iron oxide), yellow ochres contain water in the mineral structure, which contributes to their mellow, earthy tone and dependable stability.
Ground in linseed oil with no additives, Italian Dark Ochre is semi-transparent with medium tinting strength and a medium drying rate, making it an easy everyday earth for underpainting, landscapes, and portrait work. Use it to warm highlights, soften greens, or create natural skin and stone mixtures without chalkiness. Mixed with titanium white, it produces beautiful warm sand, straw, and muted golden tints that sit naturally in a painting.
