Rublev Colours French Burnt Umber is a genuine natural earth umber made from pigment sourced in the Luberon Massif (Gargas and Rustrel, France) and ground in linseed oil with no additives. This classic PBr7 iron-manganese oxide produces a rich, deep brown that is semi-transparent, with a balanced tinting strength and a smooth, “long” handling that pulls beautifully with the brush.

French Burnt Umber is a studio staple for fast, confident painting. Use it to block in shadows, build warm darks, and create transparent glazes that add depth without heaviness. It is also an excellent choice for underpainting and lean layers thanks to its naturally fast drying rate, helping you move through stages efficiently while maintaining strong adhesion between layers.

Why artists love it

  • Genuine French earth pigment (PBr7) from the Luberon ocher region

  • Semi-transparent dark brown for glazing, shadows, and tonal foundations

  • Fast drying, ideal for underpainting and layered oil techniques

  • ASTM lightfastness I, permanence A

  • Linseed oil binder, no added waxes or stabilisers (minor separation can occur naturally)
