Rublev French Raw Umber is a single pigment, natural earth brown made from minerals sourced by the last remaining European producer operating the historic ochre deposits of Gargas and Rustrel in the Luberon Massif, France. This classic raw umber is based on iron oxide-hydroxide with manganese oxide (α-FeOOH·MnO2), giving it the characteristic cool, earthy brown tone that artists rely on for structure, value control, and natural neutrals.

French Raw Umber is semi-opaque with medium tinting strength and is known for a fast drying rate, making it especially useful for underpainting, initial block-ins, and layered oil painting where you want an earth colour that sets quickly and supports subsequent layers. It mixes beautifully into flesh shadows, landscape earths, and architectural neutrals, and it is excellent for reducing chroma without making mixtures look dead. With titanium white it produces a wide range of warm-to-cool greys and soft khaki-taupe tints.

  • Pigment: French Raw Umber, PBr 7 (natural inorganic)

  • Binder: Linseed oil

  • Additives: None

  • Opacity: Semi-opaque

  • Tinting strength: Medium

  • Drying rate: Fast

  • ASTM lightfastness: I

  • Permanence: A (permanent)

Note: Because Rublev Artist Oils contain no waxes or stabilisers, slight natural separation of pigment and oil may occur. Knead the tube to remix before painting.
