Rublev French Burnt Umber is a rich natural earth brown sourced from the historic Gargas and Rustrel quarries in the Luberon Massif, France. This traditional burnt umber is made from an iron-manganese oxide earth (Fe2O3·MnO2), valued for its warm depth, natural transparency, and dependable behaviour in layered oil painting.
French Burnt Umber is semi-transparent with medium tinting strength, making it ideal for glazing, tonal underpainting, and building deep shadows without muddying mixtures. It is also a fast drying earth colour, which makes it especially useful for underlayers, lean passages, and painters working in a structured, multi-layer process. Mixed with titanium white it produces warm taupes and earthy greys, perfect for portraits, landscape structure, and architectural neutrals.
